First, the acting was phenomenal. Full stop. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell carry this movie, and every scene they share is a masterclass in timing — the kind of performances that make you forget you’re watching actors at all.
The story itself is sad. But the way it’s told? With dark humor that had me actually laughing out loud. That’s the wild thing about this movie — it can break your heart and crack you up in the same breath, and somehow both feelings are true at the same time.
Underneath the humor, though, there’s a question that stayed with me after the credits: dying with dignity. If you know the end is inevitable, how do you choose your end? That’s what this movie sits with, and it doesn’t let you look away from it.
Martin McDonagh’s *Wild Horse Nine* is a black comedy that earns both halves of that label — the comedy and the darkness. It’s sad, it’s hilarious, and it asks a question worth wrestling with. It opens in theaters November 6, and this is one you want on your list.
