ito Paez closes his “Los años salvajes” trilogy with The Golden Light, a new solo piano album that features previously unreleased compositions, in an intimate plan with those brushstrokes that spring from his insatiable inspiration.
This nine-track recording includes three instrumental oeuvres: “El mar de Gerardo”, “Cervecería Gorostarzu” and “The Golden Light”. Paez also performs a heartfelt a capella English lyrics song (“The moon over Manhattan”), while he is joined by the beautiful female voices of Abril Olivera (“Enciende el amor”) and Etta Craft (“Diosa del sol”). Another highlight is “Sus auriculares”, a song dedicated to his mentor and colleague Charly García, which he had premiered live at homage concert held last October at the Teatro Colon, in Buenos Aires.
From begging to end, this is a reflexive album by an artist who always takes artistic risks on his works. Paez himself explains its genesis:“During the pandemic I sat on the piano many times. Occupational hazard. The idea was to put the phone nearby and film an improvisation. No prior plans. Some of the ideas that came together in “The Golden Light” arose from those home recordings, which I called “Quarentine sessions”. During the whirlwind recording of “Los años salvajes” y “Futurología Arlt”, which were composed and arranged almost in parallel, a feeling was emerging, gently but firmly, that ended up being unappealable. Something was missing. A calmer album, but no less intense for that matter, which would end up giving me the feeling of accomplishing a great work. “The Golden Light” slipped silently between the cracks of dreams and the misfortunes that occur amid so much action…These nine pieces ended up resulting in the final poem of this trilogy. A man in a room with a piano remembering scenes, traversed by the bucolic feeling of a nostalgia that went out to fly thought time. Finally, those are the bones and blood from the man who went through many savage years and returned from the high symphonic peaks to the calm beach of reeds along the Parana River in an improbable and long night transfigured with golden light.”
